ART*A*DEMICS
academic learning through art
Why art?
RIGOR
A fun lesson is a rigorous lesson. Studies show that when dopamine (the brain's reward chemical) is present during learning, memory is enhanced. Engaging students through fun creative activities actually speeds up their mastery of a concept.
confidence
Gone are the days of "I can't" or "I'm bad at this." The arts naturally create a low-pressure environment where the focus is on the experience and the process, rather than the grade. Kids are free to overcome mental hang-ups that prevent them from persevering and taking risks.
critical thinking
True learning isn't about memorization, it's about learning to work with what you've memorized. What is the point of learning to write if you never feel the joy of writing something important? The arts provide a way for kids to process and analyze new learning in a way that is relevant to their own lives and meaningful.
Every child learns differently. Some can sit still, others can't. Some can learn by listening, others need to see it. The arts offer a multitude of activities that can be harnessed for all personalities, attention spans, individual challenges and modes of learning.

About Ms. Flint
Tutoring Options
While every child's learning plan is individualized, most lessons fall into one of four categories.
READING/WRITING VIA STORYTELLING
PHONICS & EARLY READING
1st - 8th Grade
PreK +
This works best for kids who already have a foundation in reading, but need to build confidence and practice certain skills. Kids write and read their own stories, plays, puppet shows, movies, etc., as Ms. Carly assesses and guides the practice toward areas for improvement.
Using a tried and true "Alphabet Beat", kids learn a rhythmic dance that pairs letter recognition to letter sounds. Students practice blending, chunking, sight words and more through games, storytelling, books and art, according to what they enjoy.

RESEARCH AND ESSAY WRITING
3rd Grade - College
Students pick a topic of curiosity and learn appropriate note-taking strategies. They then outline, exploring logical organization and progression of ideas. Once it's time to write, they practice strong writing technique such as word choice, new vocabulary, transitions and flow.
ELEMENTARY MATH
PreK - 5th Grade
Games, stories, and visual art are ideal for practicing math skills until they are second nature. After taking the time to understand specific concepts, students practice until mastery through games they enjoy, story-puzzles, and art projects.
Virtual lessons are $55/hour
Carly Flint is a certified teacher with ten years of experience in multiple classroom and individual settings. She is passionate about guiding children to believe in themselves, think critically, and excel academically through storytelling, movement and art.

She began her tutoring career as an SAT/GRE tutor while an undergrad at Vassar College. After obtaining a B.A. in Theater she moved to New York to pursue this passion, but still wanted to teach. This led her to obtain her K - 8 teaching certification through Teach for America as an Early Childhood Teacher. Here she taught early reading, writing and math skills to kids with a diverse array of learning challenges. She continued as a Creative Expression Teacher and Arts Infusion Specialist at Tulsa Legacy Charter School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she further explored using the arts to teach academics. In summers she taught at various art camps, co-founding her own at the Tulsa YMCA called "Inside-OUT" which was free for kids from low income communities and focused on healing through art.

Still a visual artist and playwright in her other career, Ms. Flint received an MFA in Dramatic Writing from the University of Southern California in 2021. Before graduating, she won The Bellman's Prize in the USC "Wonderland" Awards, and was a finalist in the 2022 Alliance Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition. She writes, tutors, runs after school programming, and has taught over 1,000 individual kids to date.
